hey everyone,
i’ve got something important and time-sensitive to share with you.
our beloved hillcrest is on the brink of a significant transformation, and we need to rally together to support the creation of the hillcrest lgbtq+ cultural district.
this initiative is coming up for approval at the san diego planning commission this week, on thursday may 30th at 9am, and it’s crucial that we show up and voice our support.
why this matters
hillcrest has long been a safe haven and vibrant community for lgbtq+ individuals. it's a place where we can be ourselves, celebrate our identities, and find solidarity. however, with new developments on the horizon, there’s a risk of losing the very essence that makes hillcrest so special.
the lgbtq+ cultural district is designed to protect our community spaces and ensure that as hillcrest grows, it retains its unique character and continues to be a safe and welcoming place for all of us.
what’s at stake
the hillcrest lgbtq+ cultural district is part of the hillcrest focused plan amendment, which includes several protections for our community.
these protections will guide future developments, ensuring they respect and preserve the lgbtq+ culture of hillcrest.
this includes accommodations in new constructions relating to sound, wayfinding elements to signal the cultural district, and noise protections for our nightlife establishments. it also promotes a mix of housing options and better public transportation, crucial for maintaining the diverse & inclusive nature of our neighborhood.
how you can help?
attend the meeting: show up in person or via zoom for the planning commission meeting at 9am on thursday may 30th at city hall, 202 c street, 12th floor. your presence will make a significant impact.
write letters of support: submit your comments in favor of the lgbtq+ cultural district using the planning commission webform. your voice matters, and these letters can make a big difference.
why your support is crucial
our community has been working on establishing the lgbtq+ cultural district for years! the hillcrest business association as well as many other organizations & people have been working so hard. now is the time to get it done!
this district will help preserve the spaces and businesses that make hillcrest a vibrant and inclusive community.
by showing up and voicing our support, we can ensure that hillcrest remains a safe haven for lgbtq+ individuals for generations to come.
until next time,
edgard
