once a week, i’d like to share a few things with you that have been lighting up my world lately; or at least making some form of deep impact on me.
my intention here is to share the sparks that keep me going, inspiring me to think deeper and feel more connected to the world.
here’s what i’m currently obsessed with:
song: “i hope” by rebecca ferguson.
this song has been on repeat for me lately. rebecca ferguson is a british singer, this particular song is from 2013. it’s about breaking free from a difficult relationship and getting to the point where you forgive someone and create your own closure. it’s beautifully empowering, if not bittersweetly so. and rebecca is just a great, soulful vocal powerhouse - strong recommend.
book: “puerto rico: a national history” by jorell meléndez-badillo
they say that if you don’t know your history, you’re doomed to repeat it. i say that if you don’t know your history - you won’t know where you’re going. this book was an incredibly enlightening and infuriating read. to realize the depth of how colonialism keeps puerto rico and its people down is to become angry and incensed. this book takes you through the history, resilience, and everlasting love puerto ricans have for their island. walk away learning more about your own country, get mad about the colonialism that is happening right in your backyard - and done, above all, in YOUR name. i dare you to care about other causes while you care for whatever cause du jour has your attention at the moment! we can talk, chew gum, and walk at the same time. we really can.
song: “murphy’s law” by róisín murphy
i am always on the lookout for the next funky, nasty, real low-down boogie disco jam to shake the bon bon. (aw lawd, dating myself there.) róisín murphy is an iconic artist and her music is always a personal go-to in low moments or whenever i am in need for a song that makes you feel very much like a main character. this jam in itself is hilarious - it takes the famous internet adage of “murphy’s law” and she uses it to own her own messes. murphy’s law is the idea that “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” and honestly - the song’s opening line is fucking iconic: “i feel my story's still untold / but I'll make my own happy ending / i guess i'd rather be alone / than making do and mending…”
hope these little sparks keep you going as much as they have with me! and feel free to share with me what’s keeping YOU lit and going.
happy saturday, babies. <3
